Order:   Apodiformes

Family:   Trochilidae

Species:   Thalurania glaucopis

IOC English name:  Violet-capped Woodnymph

This beautiful hummingbird is commonly seen in green and better preserved areas in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It measures approximately 11 centimeters in length. The male has a fluorescent green color, with the exception of his forehead, which is violet. The female, in turn, has white color in the frontal region and green in the rest of the body. It feeds on nectar and small insects and likes to bathe in the rain. It can be spotted occasionally on the Praia Vermelha Campus, looking for food, most likely coming from the MONA region (Natural Monument of the Morro do Pão de Açúcar and Urca), having already been spotted a nest of the species on Rua Lauro Müller.
