It is one of the largest species of hummingbird and the best known of large cities. Measures between 15 and 19 centimeters and has the trademark caudal feathers in the shape of scissors. Its feathers are predominantly dark blue and green, and can be better appreciated when the bird is in good light. It is extremely aggressive with other birds, attacking from other hummingbirds to hawks to defend its territory and its food sources. It feeds on nectar and small insects, which it hunts in flight. It is the most common hummingbird on the Campus of Praia Vermelha and can be easily seen next to the flowering trees.
