Order:   Passeriformes

Family:   Tyrannidae

Species:   Pitangus sulphuratus

IOC English name:  Great Kiskadee

One of the best known birds in the country for its singing, the Great Kiskadee measures between 20 and 25 centimeters. It has brownish wings, a yellow belly, a white neck, and a black head, with a white band above the eyes. The Great Kiskadee also has a yellowish tuft that is only shown in situations of anger or excitement. It is a territorial bird and quite aggressive, even attacking much larger animals, such as hawks and toucans. It is one of the birds with the most varied diet, including fruits, flowers, insects, reptiles, fish, crustaceans, small mammals, eggs, young birds and even animal feed, which is why it adapts so well to different environments. They can be easily seen throughout the Campus of Praia Vermelha, and there are already records of nests of the species within the Campus.
