Order:   Passeriformes

Family:   Estrildidae

Species:   Estrilda astrild

IOC English name:  Common Waxbil

This bird, originally from Africa, became common in large Brazilian cities. Measuring between 10 and 13 centimeters, the Common Waxbil has reddish tones in the belly, lighter in the chest and darker in the back and wings. Its trademark is the red mask (like a letter seal) at eye level, which gives the species its name. The seal-beak is always seen in flocks, feeding on grass seeds or perched on trees. They always fly in the cloud, very well synchronized. They can be easily seen in the grassy areas of the Praia Vermelha Campus.
