Order:
Falconiformes
Family:
Falconidae
Species:
Milvago chimachima
IOC English name:
Yellow-headed Caracara
Possibly the most common hawk in urban environments, the tick can be easily identified by its shriek of "PINHÉ". It measures between 36 and 45 centimeters and its wingspan reaches 74 centimeters. It has a completely "dirty" white color, with the exception of the wings, which are dark, and a small black line at eye level. It has a white bar at the end of its wings, which helps in its identification in flight. It feeds mainly on bovine and equine parasites, but can also go after various foods, such as carrion, termites, young birds and even fruits. It can be seen perched on top of the buildings or flying over the Praia Vermelha Campus.
