Order:   Psittaciformes

Family:   Psittacidae

Species:   Amazona amazonica

IOC English name:  Orange-winged Parrot

Very similar to the true parrot, the curica is yet another species to be called only "maritaca" by cariocas. Measuring between 31 and 34 centimeters, the curicas are predominantly green, with the exception of yellow in the region of the face, the blue mask at eye level and the orange feathers of the wings and tail. Like parrots, curicas are extremely faithful and spend their lives with a single partner. They are long-lived, living 50 to 60 years in the wild. They feed on seeds, fruits and flowers. They can be seen flying in couples on the Campus of Praia Vermelha, where they take the opportunity to eat fruit and vocalize together, especially at the beginning of the day.
