IOC English name:
Green-barred Woodpecker
One of the most beautiful woodpeckers in Brazil, the green-barred woodpecker is a species that has become increasingly common in Rio de Janeiro. Measuring about 28 centimeters, its plumage is greenish, with black dots on the chest and belly and black stripes on the wings and back. The face is white in the eye region, with a dark forehead and a red tuft. While the male has a reddish mustache, the female has a dark mustache, which is the best way to differentiate them. It has a varied diet, including ants, insects and fruits. Vocalizes very little, singing more during the mating season. It can be seen occasionally in the trees of the Campus, drumming the wood in search of food.
