Order:   Passeriformes

Family:   Fringillidae

Species:   Euphonia violacea

IOC English name:  Violaceous Euphonia

This beautiful bird is known for its abilities to imitate the singing of other birds. Measuring between 11 and 12 centimeters, the male of the species has a strong yellow from the base of the beak to the belly, while the back, wings and face are a very dark blue. It also has a very yellow spot on the forehead. The female, in turn, is all yellow, with olive tones. With its vocal abilities, the gaturamo can imitate dozens of birds, in sequence, in a single singing, and its repertoire varies from region to region. Generally seen as a couple, the Violaceous Euphonia eats fruits and, rarely, insects. They can be easily seen on the Praia Vermelha Campus, and have been seen younglings of the species on the Campus.
