Large bird, more common in the interior of the country. It measures about 55 centimeters, with a wingspan of up to 1.38 meters. Its plumage is all brownish, with rusty tones, and the tips of its wing and tail feathers are black. Also known as "gavião-fumaça(smoke-hawk)", it usually accompanies forest fires, looking for small, escaping prey. Its diet is quite broad, including small mammals, birds, snakes, lizards, amphibians, insects, and crabs. It usually inhabits more open, less forested areas. It can occasionally be seen on the Praia Vermelha Campus.
