Order:   Accipitriformes

Family:   Accipitridae

Species:   Buteo albonotatus

IOC English name:  Zone-tailed Hawk

A very stealthy species, the zone-tailed hawk is rarely seen in the city of Rio de Janeiro, even by experienced observers. It is a large hawk, measuring about 51 centimeters in length and 129 centimeters in wingspan. It has predominantly black plumage, with a clear bar at the bottom of the wings and with white bands at the bottom of the tail (3 bands in the male, 2 bands in the female). Their characteristics and behavior are very reminiscent of that of vultures, and the species uses these similarities to approach its prey without being aware of the danger that lurks. It feeds on birds, mammals and reptiles, inhabiting open and forested areas. He was seen flying over the Praia Vermelha Campus towards MONA (Monumento Natural dos Morros do Pão de Açúcar e da Urca).
