Order:   Psittaciformes

Family:   Psittacidae

Species:   Diopsittaca nobilis

IOC English name:  Red-shouldered Macaw

The Red-shouldered Macaw is similar to the Blue-winged Macaw, but has a more discreet plumage. It measures between 30 and 35 centimeters and is predominantly green, with red marks on the middle part of the wings. Like the real maracanã, it has no feathers in the region close to the eyes, which is white in color, and has the top of the head bluish, but without the red spot of its largest relative. It feeds on palm coconuts and various fruits. They are easily seen in small flocks around the Campus of Praia Vermelha in the early morning and late afternoon, either flying over the campus with your typical shouting, or eating fruit on the trees.
