Psittacidae
Species:
Primolius maracana
IOC English name:
Blue-winged Macaw
One of the most beautiful birds in the country, the Blue-winged Macaw is a species hardly seen in the city of Rio de Janeiro and is classified as "almost threatened" with extinction. Measuring about 40 centimeters in length, the Blue-winged Macaw is commonly confused with the other "maritacas" that populate the skies of Rio de Janeiro. It has a beautiful plumage, predominantly green, with blue details on the wings and tail, which is also dyed in red and yellow. It has no feathers in the region near the eyes, which is white in color, and has a bluish head with a small red spot on the forehead. This bird feeds on fruits, mainly on palm trees. It can be seen in the trees of the Campus of Praia Vermelha in search of food, usually in the company of Red-shouldered Macaws.
