IOC English name:
Picazuro Pigeon
A well-known bird of national folklore, the Picazuro Pigeon has already been sung in verse and prose by Luís Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira. It is usually more robust than the domestic pigeon, measuring about 34 centimeters. Its tweet is easily identified. It is a beautiful dove, predominating the grayish-brown and purplish colors in its plumage, in addition to the white mark on the wings, which gives the species its name. It can be heard and seen easily throughout the Campus of Praia Vermelha, either on top of trees and poles, or on the ground, looking for grains and fruits. White-winged nests have already been spotted within the campus.
