Order:
Psittaciformes
Family:
Psittacidae
Species:
Brotogeris chiriri
IOC English name:
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet
Very similar to the Plain Parakeet, it has completely green plumage, with the exception of the junction of the wings, which shows a yellow stripe that draws a lot of attention in flight. It feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, flowers, nectar and termites. They build their nests in tree cavities, tiles, Rufous Hornero nests and termite moats. It is a species well adapted to the urban environment and can form flocks of dozens of individuals. They can be seen occasionally flying over and eating fruit on top of the trees on the Campus da Praia Vermelha.
