Order:
Psittaciformes
Family:
Psittacidae
Species:
Brotogeris tirica
IOC English name:
Plain Parakeet
Possibly the most common parakeet in big cities. It is small, measuring only 21 centimeters. They have completely green plumage, which allows them to have a perfect camouflage at the top of the trees, and they have a strong beak, which they use to break and eat coconuts, fruits, seeds and flowers. They are seen flying in large flocks around the city, always with a fast and synchronized flight. Like most parakeets and parrots, they form couples that last a lifetime. They can be seen flying over and eating fruit at the top of the trees at the Praia Vermelha Campus.
