Order:   Passeriformes

Family:   Mimidae

Species:   Mimus saturninus

IOC English name:  Chalk-browed Mockingbird

Despite its name and appearance, the field thrush does not belong to the family of the other thrushes that appear on campus. Measuring between 23 and 26 centimeters, the species has gray and brownish plumage, with a thin black mask at eye level. The field thrush is an excellent singer and imitator, managing to perfectly reproduce the sound of several birds. It is an omnivorous species, feeding mainly on insects and fruits, but also eating eggs, baby birds and invertebrates. It has a very slow flight, calling attention to the size of its long tail, which usually stays "in sight". It can be seen both on the ground and in the trees of the Praia Vermelha Campus, with a record of the species' nest inside the Campus.
