Order:
Passeriformes
Family:
Turdidae
Species:
Turdus amaurochalinus
IOC English name:
Creamy-bellied Thrush
This migratory species appears in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the cold months, from May to August. It measures about 21 centimeters and is completely brown, being very similar to the thrush, with the difference that it has a black mask at eye level. A curiosity is that its beak, usually black, turns bright yellow in the reproductive period. Its Portuguese name "poca" refers to the "noise" that the bird makes in its singing. It is usually seen perched on trees or looking for food on the ground. This species feeds on insects and small fruits. It can be seen at the Praia Vermelha Campus in the winter months.
