Order:   Passeriformes

Family:   Thraupidae

Species:   Tersina viridis

IOC English name:  Swallow Tanager

This migratory species is considered one of the most beautiful birds of the Brazilian fauna. Measuring about 14 centimeters, it has a clear sexual deformity, the male being blue, with a large black mask, white tones on the belly and black stripes on its side. The female, in turn, is green, with a shy mask at eye level and with green stripes on the side of the body. Its name comes from the fact that it is perched like swallows, with an erect body. It feeds on small fruits and insects, being an excellent seed disperser. It usually stays in flocks, always at the top of the trees. It can be seen at the Praia Vermelha Campus in the coldest months of the year.
